Skin is the largest organ of the human body and is the first line of defence, protecting us from numerous external environmental factors every day. Culturally, skin defines the standard for beauty. Bright, youthful skin signals health and vitality, and like every other part of the body, skin responds to care and attention. Our skin works so well that it is natural to take it for granted. However, prolonged exposure to sun, stress, pollution and bad habits takes a toll on its condition and appearance.
How the skin loses its lustre and starts ageing depends on a variety of factors such as lifestyle, diet, heredity and other personal habits. For example, smoking produces free radicals which lead to premature wrinkles. The sun also plays a major role in the premature ageing of the skin.
However, there are a lot of ways to reduce the premature skin ageing. Some are preventive methods, some are natural methods and others are cosmetic skin treatments such as laser skin resurfacing, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, botox and filler injections
The most effective preventive method is protecting the skin from the sun. Always wear a sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher and one that is water resistant when you go out in the sun.
Microdermabrasion is the most advanced treatment to reduce visible signs of ageing. It is a long-term treatment which reduces the appearance of sun spots, age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars and skin pigmentation. Microdermabrasion deeply exfoliates the skin encouraging formation of fresh collagen and new skin cells, thus reducing the signs of ageing. This treatment is performed by a licensed skin care professional in the surgeon’s office or medical spa.
There are two methods of microdermabrasion, one is crystal and the other is a diamond method.
Crystal microdermabrasion is an ablative procedure that removes dead or dry cells with friction and heat. A handheld device is used which shoots a high-speed stream of aluminium oxide crystals onto the skin to blast away dirt and dead skin cells.
Diamond microdermabrasion is the latest technology in microdermabrasion treatment and is safe when compared to the crystal process. Instead of ablation, this process uses abrasion to remove dirt and dead skin cells. It uses a wand tipped with laser-cut diamonds which is attached to a microdermabrasion machine. The machine gently exfoliates the skin and whisks away dead cells to promote growth of healthy and new cells for a smoother, more radiant and flawless complexion. Precious gems are used because they are durable and do not leave powder or dust after use. Surprisingly the modern version costs less than its predecessor and that is because it does not use a continuous flow of crystals.
Laser skin resurfacing is another popular method that can help rejuvenate the skin and reduce the effects of sun, ageing and some facial skin disorders. During the procedure, laser is used to dissolve the molecular bonds of damaged skin cells. The latest development in laser skin resurfacing is the ultra Ramen laser that harnesses laser-cut diamonds to produce light beams with more power and wider range of colours. Diamonds help to adjust the colour of the light beam to meet specific needs for skin treatments. Laser beams controlled by diamonds gently vaporise the skin tissues to treat wrinkles, blemishes, scars and seal blood vessels.
Laser-cut diamonds used in skin treatment offers enhanced results as compared to their predecessors and also offer great value for money.
